Britain has a skills problem. The Construction Industry Training Board estimates the sector needs around 250,000 new workers by 2028. NHS workforce plans consistently flag shortages in clinical roles. Engineering apprenticeship completions haven’t kept pace with demand for years. There’s no single fix for any of this, but one tool that’s quietly become a serious part of the answer is immersive XR training — and its adoption across UK apprenticeship programmes has accelerated dramatically over the past 18 months.

The appeal is pretty straightforward. Traditional apprenticeship training requires access to real equipment, real environments, and real supervision at every stage. That’s expensive to arrange, logistically complicated, and sometimes genuinely dangerous for learners who haven’t yet built up their skills. VR sidesteps a lot of that. A trainee electrician can practise isolating a live panel dozens of times before they ever touch one in the real world. A care worker can practise moving a patient with limited mobility without any risk to an actual patient. The simulation is never perfect, but it builds the muscle memory and decision-making instincts that make the real thing go better.

What’s Actually Getting Used

UK companies are running a fairly wide range of XR training deployments, but a few platforms keep coming up. Immerse.io, a Leeds-based company, has built a strong position in the UK market with training simulations for construction, utilities, and healthcare — their partnership with CITB (the Construction Industry Training Board) has put their platform into dozens of apprenticeship programmes. Talespin, originally US-based but with a significant UK customer base, focuses on soft skills and compliance training, which sounds less exciting but is genuinely useful for apprentices navigating workplace behaviour for the first time.

Network Rail has been running VR safety inductions for several years now and has extended the approach to include track maintenance simulations. The case for doing this is obvious when you think about it — you really don’t want someone’s first experience of working near live rail infrastructure to be unguided. BAE Systems uses immersive training across several of their apprenticeship pathways, particularly in engineering and manufacturing contexts where the equipment is both expensive and potentially hazardous.

The NHS is probably the most high-profile adopter in the UK. Several NHS trusts now use VR as part of clinical training for nursing and allied health apprenticeships. Oxford University Hospitals, University College London Hospitals, and a number of others have trialled or deployed platforms like Oxford Medical Simulation and FundamentalVR for skills like cannulation, basic surgical techniques, and resuscitation — areas where trainees historically could only practise on mannequins or wait for supervised clinical opportunities.

Does the Apprenticeship Levy Cover It?

Here’s the thing that often isn’t clear to employers: XR training costs can in many cases be funded through the apprenticeship levy, provided the training is delivered by an approved training provider and forms part of the registered apprenticeship standard. The key is that it needs to contribute to the apprentice’s competency development against the standard — it can’t just be supplementary content bolted on the side.

Some training providers have started to bundle XR simulation into their apprenticeship delivery as standard, which means the levy funding covers it automatically. Others offer it as an add-on. If you’re an employer with unspent levy funds — and there are plenty of those, given that levy funds expire after 24 months — XR training content is worth exploring as a way to genuinely improve training outcomes rather than let the money lapse.

The Honest Case for VR Over Traditional Methods

To be honest, the research on VR training effectiveness is more mixed than the marketing suggests. For procedural, physical skills — the kind where repetition and muscle memory matter — the evidence is genuinely strong. VR accelerates skill acquisition, reduces error rates in early practice, and improves retention compared to video or text-based instruction. For interpersonal and communication skills, the evidence is promising but less conclusive.

The other honest point is that VR training doesn’t replace on-the-job learning. No simulation of driving a forklift replaces actually driving a forklift with an experienced supervisor. What it does is compress the early learning curve so that when an apprentice gets into that real environment, they’re already operating at a higher baseline. That has real value — for the apprentice, for the employer, and for whoever else is in the room.

Getting Started Without a Big Budget

You don’t need a purpose-built VR suite to run this kind of training. A handful of standalone headsets — Meta Quest 3 or PICO 4 Ultra are both sensible choices for training deployments — combined with an off-the-shelf training platform is enough to get started. The per-headset hardware cost has come down substantially; the bigger variable is the content licensing, which ranges from a few hundred pounds per year for catalogue content to considerably more for bespoke simulation development.

For employers just exploring the space, the CITB offers funded trials for construction training applications, and several NHS trusts have published case studies on their clinical simulation programmes that are worth reading before committing to a platform. The UK XR Safety Hub, a government-backed initiative, also publishes guidance on best practice for immersive safety training specifically.

The skills gap isn’t going to close itself. But the combination of an engaged apprentice, good in-person mentoring, and the right immersive training tools is producing results that are hard to argue with.
