If you ask most people outside the industry where XR innovation happens, they’ll say Silicon Valley, maybe Tokyo or Seoul. The honest answer in 2026 is that Britain has quietly built one of the more comprehensive ecosystems for immersive technology in the world — not through a single dominant company, but through a network of publicly funded programmes, regional clusters, and collaboration infrastructure that’s been growing for nearly a decade.
It’s not perfect. Funding gaps still exist, particularly for companies trying to bridge from prototype to commercial scale. But the support infrastructure — especially for early-stage startups — is genuinely impressive once you know where it is.
Digital Catapult and the CreativeXR Programme
Digital Catapult is the UK’s advanced digital technology innovation centre, funded by Innovate UK as part of the broader Catapult network. Its immersive technology work sits primarily under the CreativeXR programme, which runs cohorts of funded immersive content companies through a development and market access programme.
CreativeXR has backed over 60 projects since launching, distributing more than £1.2 million in direct grant funding across those cohorts. The grants themselves aren’t enormous — typically in the £20,000–£40,000 range per project — but they come with something arguably more valuable: a structured development programme with industry mentorship, access to Digital Catapult’s immersive technology labs, and routes to commissioning conversations with broadcasters and cultural institutions.

Digital Catapult also runs the Immersive Technology Labs in London and Manchester, which give startups and studios access to a broad range of XR hardware for testing without having to buy every headset that exists. Innovate UK’s Immersive Tech Network

Innovate UK’s main funding vehicle for XR companies is its standard Innovate UK Smart Grants and Innovate UK EDGE programmes, which aren’t immersive-tech-specific but absolutely fund XR projects.
