Apple Vision Pro 2 does even better, and adds the micro-OLED displays that make the virtual elements genuinely crisp against the real-world background. We’re past the prototype stage.
The question now isn’t whether passthrough works. It’s what you’d actually use it for.
The Case for Passthrough at Your Desk
The obvious pitch is virtual monitors. Instead of buying a second or third physical screen, you put the headset on and summon as many windows as you like. And to be honest, it works better than you’d expect. The Quest 3S with the Immersed or Meta’s own Horizon Workrooms can give you a genuinely spacious multi-monitor setup that you’d pack into a laptop bag.
But that’s not really the interesting part. The interesting part is the blend.
With passthrough on the Quest 3S, you can have a virtual browser window floating to your left, your actual physical keyboard visible through the cameras, and your phone sitting on the desk in the real world. You can glance at a document on your screen, pick up a pen, write a note on real paper, and look back at the virtual window without breaking flow. The headset isn’t separating you from your physical workspace — it’s extending it.
This matters more than the virtual monitor pitch because it addresses the thing that makes wearing a headset for sustained work feel strange. You’re not locked into a completely artificial environment. You can see your coffee. You can make eye contact with someone who walks into the room. The divide between “in headset” and “not in headset” starts to blur in a way it didn’t with earlier passthrough.
What Works Better Than Expected
Reading has improved dramatically. On the Quest 3S, text on a virtual document is crisp enough for sustained reading without fatigue, assuming you’ve got the IPD dialled in correctly and the lenses are clean. Apple Vision Pro 2 goes a step further — the micro-OLED panels with eye tracking and foveated rendering mean text at the centre of your gaze is pin-sharp, and your eyes don’t have to work harder than they would with a physical screen.
Gesture input has also quietly gotten good. Hand tracking on both headsets means you can interact with virtual windows without picking up a controller. Pinch to select, grab to move, tap in mid-air to type on a virtual keyboard (the Quest 3S’s virtual keyboard is actually passable for short inputs). It still doesn’t replace a physical keyboard for anything more than a few sentences, but the ability to move a window with a gesture and then type on your real keyboard is a natural workflow that took about thirty minutes to feel normal.
Video calls are the other obvious use case. Meeting people’s avatars is still niche for most teams, but using the headset to have your call in one spatial window while your notes are in another, and your actual desk in front of you, is genuinely useful for concentrated focus.
What Still Needs Work
Comfort is the honest conversation stopper for long sessions. The Quest 3S battery lasts about two to three hours under mixed reality load, less if you’re doing anything compute-intensive. Apple Vision Pro 2 is tethered to an external battery. Neither lets you forget you’re wearing a headset for a full eight-hour workday.
The physical weight and heat are manageable for shorter sessions — an hour of deep focus work, a back-to-back block of calls — but they’re not background conditions yet. You’ll notice the headset in a way you don’t notice glasses or headphones.
Colour accuracy through passthrough is also still slightly off. The Quest 3S cameras have gotten good, but there’s a subtle digital processing look to the real world that most people notice on close inspection. It’s fine for functional tasks. It’s not ideal if colour accuracy matters for what you’re working on.
Where It’s Heading
The thing that feels genuinely different about mixed reality passthrough in 2026 is that the use case is no longer hypothetical. Real professionals are using it for real work — not in demos, not in press events, in actual daily workflows. Enterprise XR deployments in field service, surgery, and manufacturing have been productive for years, but the office use case was always waiting on the hardware catching up.
The hardware has caught up. What’s left is the social awkwardness of wearing a headset at a desk, the comfort ceiling for sustained use, and battery life. Two of those three are engineering problems with obvious solutions. The social bit might just be a matter of time.
